American Artist

Machine Morality

2022

San Francisco, CA

American Artist makes thought experiments that mine the history of technology, race, and knowledge production, beginning with their legal name change in 2013. Their artwork primarily takes the form of sculpture, software, and video. This banner draws inspiration from the writing of radical poet Amiri Baraka, and his 1970 essay "Technology & Ethos." Below the quote which reads "machines have the morality of their inventors" sits a technical diagram that is labeled with the industry standard terms "slave and "master."
