“We are accountable to each other. We are accountable to the land”, these words were shared recently by scholar Vicente M. Diaz who learned it while working with the Micronesian and Dakota communities in Minnesota. The communities have collaborated to build canoes and share water craft knowledge.
The idea of honoring ancestors made sense to me as a way to represent something that connects all of us in the Asian American and Pacific Island diasporas. For this billboard I honor my grandmother as part of the land, in this case Fua, Guåhan’s (Guam) rock of creation. A reference to the mobility we have all encountered in our histories, as well as the futures we forge together.
